Winter Swim

The Winter Swim Program runs from February 12th through May 13, 2012.  (This year, we are starting our sessions AFTER Superbowl Sunday so no one has to make a choice of which sport to support!)  The 12 sessions will take place at Audrey Moore REC Center/Wakefield Pool.  Each session is one hour, from 7pm to 8pm.  We will NOT meet on the two Sundays of Spring Break—April 1st and April 8th.  Swimmers should arrive at the facility with enough time to change into their suits and be ready to enter the water at 7pm.  Kings Ridge will have 3 designated lanes.  We can accommodate up to 25 swimmers so the lanes are not too crowded. Priority is given to Kings Ridge swimmers, but if the program has space available, non-members are welcome.  The fee for the 12 week program is $100 per swimmer.  No rate increase for the past 2 years!

We have 3 coaches this year—Mike Chestnut, Tim White, and Dave Charbonneau.  Mike is a swimmer at George Mason, and is known to many of you as our Masters Swim Coach from last summer.  Tim White currently swims for Robinson High School, and has been a developmental assistant and lifeguard at Kings Ridge.  Dave Charbonneau, father of Katie, Allie, and AJ, participated in the Master Swim program this summer and helped coach the 2010 Winter Swim sessions.  He also has collegiate swimming experience.

The goals of the Winter Swim Program are to help swimmers learn or improve their strokes, turns, and starts.  Through drill, practice, and weekly training, swimmers will build endurance for the upcoming summer season.  Throughout the Winter Swim sessions, we hope to emphasize good sportsmanship, build team spirit, and instill a love of the sport.

Here are some guidelines from FCPA that we must adhere to when using Wakefield Pool:

1. Swimmers are to check in at the front desk no more than 15 minutes prior to the scheduled swimming time.  The front desk will have a roster of swimmers from Kings Ridge.
2. A parent is to be located in both the men’s and women’s locker rooms to supervise swimmers while in these areas.  This is for your swimmer’s safety.  Please escort them to and from these areas and assist other parents who may request that you help their child in the gender specific locker room.
3. Swimmers are NOT to enter the water without the supervision of the coach, and then, only in the assigned space at the assigned time.
4. It is permissible and encouraged to have a volunteer parent in the middle of the lane where very young swimmers may need assistance or reassurance.  (We have a good number of very young swimmers this winter.  A Coach may ask you to help out if needed.)
5. SNOW POLICY—In the event the pool closes due to snow or inclement weather, announcements will be made on the 24 hour information line at 703-324-8661.
6. At the conclusion of each session, swimmers must clear the pool, deck, and locker room areas in a timely manner.
